Instrumental Variable

When you cannot randomise and cannot measure the confounder, sometimes nature has randomised something for you. An instrument is a variable that moves the treatment, has no other route to the outcome, and is not itself confounded — a lottery, a distance, an arbitrary cutoff. Its randomness is borrowed to identify an effect you could not otherwise reach.

Viz primitive · budget-splitinstrument-strength = 8

instrument-strength holds 50% of the budget; rest holds the remaining 50%.

Variation in the treatment the instrument actually moves against variation it leaves alone, in equal units. Drag the strength up to watch the estimate steady — at the low end you are dividing by nearly nothing.
